Born in Seoul, South Korea, Seon-hee Myong commenced her music studies at the age of four. When she was nine years old, she made her debut in a public recital dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven’s sonatas. When she was fourteen, she made her debut as a soloist with the Korean National Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No.1. At the tender age of fifteen, she moved to the United States to study at the North Carolina School of Performing Arts with Joseph Kalichstein.
From 1981 to 1985, she attended Indiana University-Bloomington and studied with Edward Auer and Zadel Skolovsky. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree with a Performer’s Certificate, the highest music qualification awarded at this university.
In 1985, a scholarship took her to Julliard School of Music in New York where she was reunited with Joseph Kalichstein, and eventually obtained her Master’s degree. From 1988 to 1990, Seon-hee Myong was an assistant professor at the State University of New York.
During her career, Seon-hee has won prizes and awards such as the Helena Rubinstein Award and the William Patscheck Award. She has frequently performed both as a soloist and with chamber music groups in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Seon-hee has recorded a CD with cellist, Lluís Claret, titled Homage a Pau Casals. She has also recorded with German, Swiss and Korean radio studios.
In 2005, Seon-hee was recruited by pianist and conductor, Daniel Barenboim, to join The Barenboim-Said Foundation which is a musical peace project dedicated to providing free music education to children and adolescents in Palestine
In 2014, she made an acclaimed debut with the Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra playing Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto.
Since the creation of the AIMS FOUNDATION in 2015, Seon-hee continues to dedicate a good portion of her time performing at social and charity concerts (hospitals, homes for the elderly, centers for disabled etc.).
