Ulrich Knörzer

Ulrich Knörzer was born in Mannheim and started playing viola after having had violin lessons for three years. In the 1970s he won three times the first prize in the German National Youth competition. 1976 he received a precious viola by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. The Deutsche Lufthansa granted him a scholarship to attend the Music Camp in Interlochen/USA.
From 1980 he studied with Rainer Moog in Cologne, where he also became Prof. Moog's Assistant. He participated in masterclasses with Max Rostal, Thomas Riebl, Sandor Vegh, Nobuko Imai, Wolfram Christ and Yuri Bashmet. Then he received another scholarship for an extra year of accomplishment with Karen Tuttle in New York. There he appeared as a soloist with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall/Lincoln Center. With the Mannheimer String Quartet he won several competitions including Evian/France and the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb in Bonn. Ulrich Knörzer joined the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990 and has for many years been a member of the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin. Since 1999 he is Professor for viola at the University of Arts Berlin. His soloistic appearances are including performances of Bartok's Viola concerto, a piece in which he is taking a particular interest. Recently he took interest in playing the baroque viola, forming the ensemble "Concerto Melante", which performs music from 16th century until the early classical period. |
